Talks on Tirupur dyeing units inconclusive

CHENNAI: The meeting convened by industries minister C Shanmugavelu on Monday to find a solution to the crisis that has gripped the Tirupur dyeing units ended without any decision being taken.

Representatives of six farmers' associations participated in the two-hour-long meeting, also attended by chief secretary Debendranath Sarangi and officials of the industries department. The farmers demanded strict implementation of the court order to ensure zero liquid discharge from the dyeing units, said KC Kulandaisamy, president of the association of farmers affected by the pollution of Orathapalayam dam. "We pointed out that groundwater and waterways were getting polluted due to the release of effluents from the dyeing units. The government should take action against the units that are clandestinely functioning, violating the court order," he told TOI.

Later, Shanmugavelu held discussions with representatives of dyeing unit owners and textile exporters. "We explained to the minister that more than 20 lakh people are affected by the court order. We expect the government to mediate for an amicable solution to the issue. If ensuring zero liquid discharge is the only solution, the government should finance the effluent treatment plants," Divyar S Nagaraj, president of dyeing unit owners' association told TOI.
