COIMBATORE: At least fourteen living on the banks of the swelling Noyyal River in the hosier city of Tirupur in western Tamil Nadu could be dead after flash floods washed away their houses in the wee hours of Monday. The city has been lashed by incessant rains on Sunday night. Five of those missing and suspected to be dead are from a single family.
According to police officials, rain started pounding the city from around 10.30pm on Sunday night and went on until about 3am. The affected areas are settlements along the banks of the Noyyal River and its tributaries running through the heart of the city.
The main reason for the death is unplanned growth of the Tirupur. Because in Tirupur there is no permanent job for workers. No company not worry about the workers house. So poor workers are occupied their house in the banks of the Noyyal river. Boom of the Knitting industry workers are living in slums at banks of the river. Many place river becoming narrow day by day. So the 6.11.2011 night heavy rain many workers lost their life.
Tirupur company must provide the housing for their workers. One thing is exposed that tirupur industry does not worry about the environment of river and environment of workers.
